Soan | A Nouvelle Star Is Born---Tonight, all of France will be tuned into M6 for the final round of “Nouvelle Star,” the Gallic version of “American Idol” that’s captured the hearts not only of the French public but also of the fashion press. French television is already infamous for high-concept game shows and indefatigable talking heads, and fittingly les françaises have taken to “Nouvelle Star” like flies to blue cheese. But Soan, one of the two finalists tonight, is nothing short of a phenomenon: his piercings and tattoos, pretty face, smoky eye makeup (l’oeil de biche, i.e., doe-eye) and deep baritone tow a perfect line between gamine and libertine, like the love child Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo never had.
In his endearingly sincere rendition of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus,” Soan appears to be wearing a kind of flannel ball-gown, the train slung dramatically over his forearm. (Jean Paul Gaultier has even designed several of Soan’s costumes.) And unlike his American counterparts (say, Adam Lambert) Soan is convincingly mal aimé: his facial hair is scrawny and unkempt, and he’s pale and unhealthily skinny, like he’s been living on baguettes alone. It’s part of his whole lost little bird, male Edith Piaf thing, which despite the incorporation of New Yorkais references remains undeniably French.
The divine Serge Gainsbourg notwithstanding, French pop music has long been the butt of American jokes. But shockingly, the contestants of Nouvelle Star repeatedly demonstrate good taste in rock: the de rigueur chansons françaises are there, but so are a spattering of bona fide Anglo-American hipster classics. When was the last time you heard “London Calling” on American Idol? Another contestant on the show by the name of Camelia even did that Moldy Peaches song, the cutesy “Anyone Else But You” (you’d know it if you heard it). Admittedly, both numbers were cringe-worthy, but still: the French showing off a better selection of rock and roll than Americans? Incroyable.New York Times.June 9, 2009, 5:52 pm
